What community access is

Community access is support to take part in social, community and everyday activities outside your home. It's about the life you want: seeing friends, joining a club, getting to the gym or the library, volunteering, or just getting comfortable catching the bus. Life skills support works alongside it, helping you build confidence with things like cooking, budgeting, shopping and travel, so you can do more for yourself over time.

Ideas people use it for

  • joining a sport, hobby or community group
  • learning to travel on public transport
  • shopping, budgeting and planning meals
  • going to the movies, markets, the beach or a local park
  • volunteering or getting ready for work
  • meeting new people and keeping in touch with friends

How it is funded

Help to take part in community, social and recreational activities is usually paid from the Core supports budget. Supports that build your skills over time, such as training to increase your independence, can come from the Capacity Building budget. Activity costs themselves, like a movie ticket or club fee, are usually paid by you. Your plan and its goals decide what's funded, and we'll go through it with you on the first call.

Matched to your interests

Community access works well when you enjoy it. We ask what you like, what you'd like to try and what makes outings easier, then match you with a worker who suits you. If the match isn't right, tell us and we'll change it. Every Psych Connect support worker holds an NDIS Worker Screening Check, a current First Aid and CPR certificate and has completed the NDIS “Quality, Safety and You” orientation. Workers who support children also hold a Blue Card.

Local to you

We support participants across Ipswich and Springfield, Brisbane north and south, Logan, Redlands and the Gold Coast. See the areas we cover for ideas in your region, or community access on the Gold Coast.

Building towards your goals

Community access is most useful when it moves you towards something you care about. We'll set small, practical steps with you, for example catching the bus to the shops with your worker, then catching it with your worker nearby, then on your own. We check in regularly on how it's going and change the plan when your goals change, so the support keeps working for you.

Questions

Common questions

Can't see your question? Call us on 0403 828 422.

Can community access be in a group?

It can be one to one or in a small group, depending on your plan and what you prefer.

Can my support worker drive me?

Tell us about transport when you call. We'll explain what's possible and any travel costs before support starts.

What if I'm not sure what I want to do?

That's fine. We'll talk about your interests and goals and suggest a few things to try.
